How it Works
Miracle Wash Laundry Balls clean your clothes without detergent. No powder, no liquid, no measuring - just drop the balls in with your washing and turn the machine on. Here's what's actually happening inside.
What's Inside the Ball
Each Miracle Wash Laundry Ball contains small mineral pellets made from sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, and a mild biodegradable surfactant. During the wash cycle, these minerals release ionised oxygen molecules and raise the pH level of the water.
This does two things: it softens the water and opens the fabric weave, which allows the movement of the water to lift and remove dirt from the fibres. No harsh chemicals required - the minerals do the work.
The pellets are naturally antibacterial and have been independently tested to destroy both E-coli and Staphylococcus bacteria.
What Miracle Wash Doesn't Contain
Most laundry detergents use the same basic mineral ingredients as Miracle Wash - but then add a range of extras to boost performance, fragrance, and appearance. Miracle Wash leaves those out.
No SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate). No petrochemicals. No harsh detergents. No artificial fragrances. No bleach, brighteners, or enzymes. No animal testing. Fully biodegradable. Safe to reuse as grey water on your garden.
The SLS-free formula is particularly important for families with sensitive skin. SLS is a known skin irritant found in almost every foaming laundry and cleaning product - including most eco brands. Dana reformulated the original Miracle Wash pellets specifically to remove it.
Why You Don't Need to Rinse
Because there's no detergent, there's nothing to rinse out. The mineral pellets leave no residue on your clothes or in your machine. If your washing machine allows it, you can turn the rinse cycle off entirely - saving water and electricity on every wash.
If you can't turn off the rinse cycle, don't worry - it won't cause any problems, it's just not necessary.
How Long Do the Balls Last
Each set of pellets lasts up to 60 washes. How long that takes in real time depends on how often you wash:
- 1 person: 18+ months
- 2 people: around 12 months
- 3-4 people: 6-9 months
- 5+ people: 4-6 months
When the pellets are spent, you don't replace the balls - just refill them. Pop the cap, tip out the old pellets, pour in the new ones. The balls themselves last for years.
Independent Testing
The environmental credentials of Miracle Wash Laundry Balls have been independently tested by Dr Robert Patterson (FIEAust, CPSS, CPAg) of Lanfax Labs, Armidale NSW. His water quality testing found phosphorus, sodium, and salinity levels all in the lowest range measured - very good from the point of view of impact on plants and soil.
Why Dana Created Miracle Wash
In 2004, Dana was a mother of four in regional WA. Three of her children suffered from eczema and allergies, and she'd made the decision to eliminate harsh chemicals from the house. The problem was that genuinely chemical-free laundry products were either too expensive to use in the volume a family of six required, or they didn't work well enough.
One afternoon, watching her grey water drain out under the fruit trees her kids played in - and ate from - she realised that whatever was in her washing water was ending up in her family's food. That was the moment she started looking for something better.
After six months of research she found a laundry ball product, but the formula contained SLS. She hired a chemist and reformulated it. The result was Miracle Wash - SLS free, genuinely biodegradable, and effective enough that she never went back to detergent.
That was over twenty years ago. The formula hasn't changed.
Getting the Best Results
- Clean your machine first - run an empty hot cycle with half a cup of bicarb soda and one cup of white vinegar before your first Miracle Wash load. Your machine will still have detergent residue in it.
- Don't overload - the balls need room to move. Overloading reduces cleaning performance.
- Use the stain remover - Miracle Wash doesn't contain the harsh chemicals detergents use to strip grease. The included stain remover paste handles tough stains before they go in the machine.
- For whites - add a quarter cup of bicarb soda to the wash. The sun also works as a natural whitener and antibacterial agent.
- For fragrance - add a few drops of essential oil to the wash. Eucalyptus oil is a good choice and has natural antibacterial properties.
- For perspiration odour - add a cup of white vinegar to the wash.
- Wash time - the balls work best with a wash cycle of 20 minutes or longer. It takes 15-20 minutes for the minerals to change the water molecules and begin lifting soil from the fabric.
